The N52 was predominately found in the E90 i, i and i, and the E60 i and i models, as well as various others such as the i, X1, and Z4 to name a few. The N52 was produced from up until when it was replaced by the turbocharged N20 engine. It is the successor to the M54 which was used in various E36, E39 and E46 models. Given the long production history, BMW was able to perfect many aspects of the engine over the production lifetime.

The engine even won top 10 best engines in both and However, the N52 still has its fair share of common reliability problems. However, I will mention one other common, non-engine related issue is the window regulators. This results in the affected window not being to roll up or down. Replacement cost is approx. The VANOS solenoids are responsible for controlling how much oil flows to the cam gears, which in turn controls the opening and closing of the valves.

Failing VANOS solenoids will result in a loss of power, poor idling, bad fuel economy, trouble starting, and the occasional limp mode. These solenoids commonly fail every 70, miles or so.

We recommend replacing them at this interval as they are likely having a negative affect on performance, although you may not know it yet. The 2A82 and 2A87 codes are for the intake and exhaust solenoids. The solenoids are exactly the same, so you just need to purchase 2 of part to replace these. It is most prevalent during cold weather or on short trips. The ticking noise is caused by the hydraulic valve adjusters, also known as lifters, not getting enough oil to function properly.

Open the hood and protect the front bumper and fender with covers, then illuminate your work area. Release all four latches which secure the air box lid to the air box. Gently pry up on the clip on the Mass Air Flow sensor to release the connector, then pull the connector out of the sensor.

Loosen the hose clamp securing the intake boot to the Mass Air Flow sensor, then pull the boot off of the sensor. Remove the air box tube from the air box lid by gently pulling the tube out of the lid, then remove the air box tube from the cowl mounted intake in the same manner.

Release the connector on the DISA valve by pushing in on the retaining clip with your finger, then pull the connector off of the valve. Push the connector and wiring harness off to the side so it is out of the way.

Begin by sliding the DISA valve out of the intake manifold approximately one inch. Place your finger on the valve as shown in the photo and rotate the flap downward until it is closed, if the flap is not closed it will be very difficult to remove from the intake manifold. Turn the DISA valve slightly as shown in the photo in order to gain the necessary clearance to slide it out of the intake manifold, and remove it from the vehicle. Wipe away any contaminants from the gasket surface inside the intake manifold with a clean, lint-free towel.

Place your finger on the valve as shown in the photo and rotate the flap downward until it is closed, and continue to hold the flap closed as you slide the valve into the intake manifold.

Step 2: Press in firmly on the valve to make sure it is fully seated into the manifold. Low end torque and high end power are improved by varying the intake runner length according to a map stored in the ECM. Engine vacuum, load and ambient temperature are used by the ECM to determine the rpm at which to switch intake manifold configuration.

The actuator used by the ECM to switch manifold configuration is a vacuum solenoid called the dual resonance intake system or DISA resonance valve valve. At low to mid-range engine speeds up to about rpmengine torque is increased as the DISA resonance valve valve closes a flap inside the manifold, effectively increasing the length of the intake runners.

This opens the resonance flap inside the intake manifold and allows air to be drawn into cylinders through additional intake runners. This provides extra air for the power needed at higher rpms. Another function of the design is that resonance waves inside the manifold pulse back and forth between opening and closing intake valves and help in cylinder filling. A faulty DISA resonance valve valve can cause a number of problems for your BMW X3 with a M54 6-cylinder engine; everything from a check engine light, rattling sounds from the engine, to a rough idle.

When the valve fails, the flap can leak engine vacuum if the seal or diaphragm fail. If the flap fails mechanically, it can come apart and get lodged in the intake manifold, and worst case scenario end up in the engine. Keep in mind that when your car was serviced before, parts may have been replaced with different size fasteners used in the replacement.

The sizes of the nuts and bolts we give may be different from what you have, so be prepared with different size sockets and wrenches. Assumed it was leaking from the coolant expansion tank common problem for this model so replaced the expansion tank with the OEM version. Also flushed coolant and added new BMW coolant. Oil leak in pan gasket. Over bucks just to change a gasket. Vacuum operated valve in exhaust by muffler not operating. Vacuum line repaired. Noise returned several days later. Internet search shows this to be common; users and dealers hack repair: block vacuum and valve.

The valve uses a flap which opens and closes to either shorten or lengthen the path the air takes to get to the cylinder chamber. Given the path is shorter, there is less space for air.

Prior to entering the engine, intake air flows through the intake manifold. The manifold is what distributes the intake air into the 6 separate cylinders of the engine.

This causes any air flowing in to bounce back off of the valve and back into the manifold. After bouncing backwards off of the valve, it then bounces off the other end, sending the air back towards the valve.

For the most efficient engine performance, you want that air to bounce back towards the valve and reach it at the exact same time the valve is opening again. This is where the DISA valve comes into play. The most tell-tale sign of a bad valve is a loud rattling noise coming from the intake system. As the seals on the valve wear down, air can slip past the valve in open and closed positions, causing a loud rattle.

The three key components of the DISA are the flat plastic flapper valve which opens and closes depending on engine rpm and throttle position, the bell crank lever that rotates it, and the vacuum pot that actuates the bell crank lever.

As shown in the pictures on the left, the bell crank lever has a male, hex shaped protrusion, which snaps into a matching female pocket on the flapper valve. These hex shaped sections are what allow the rotation of the bell crank lever to rotate the flapper valve. During normal engine operation, vibrations from pressure pulses inside the intake manifold cause the bell crank lever and flapper valve to vibrate against each other where the hex shaped portions contact each other.

These vibrations start a wear process which will cause the tiny glass fibers in the flapper valve to become exposed. Once the fibers become exposed they start to erode away the male hex portion of the weaker bell crank lever. The symptoms of a worn DISA valve include rough idle, lean engine codes and lack of low to mid rpm power.

Once the hex is shape is worn off the lever, the flapper valve no longer opens and closes in a controlled manner by the rotation of the bell crank lever. The brittle flapper valve becomes free to slap around uncontrolled within the DISA support framework.

This uncontrolled movement can lead to complete destruction of the flapper valve. The broken pieces of valve have no where else to go except through the intake manifold runners and through the motor, sometimes resulting in severe engine damage. Even a small piece of plastic broken off the flapper valve can hold an intake valve open, resulting in bent valves or much worse.

Since the only parts on the DISA valve that typically fail are the flapper valve, bell crank lever and housing seal, why replace the entire unit. The plastic crank lever has been replaced with a black anodized T6 aluminum bell crank lever that is four times stronger than the stock part it replaces.

Locking the parts together prevents any possible movement and wear between the two pieces, the 1 cause of failure in the stock design. The titanium pivot screw also replaces the stock steel pin of the original design. Since the pin is part of the pivot screw, and the pivot screw is held captive from outside the DISA housing, there is no longer a possibility of a steel pin coming loose and getting sucked into the engine.
